‘Initial quality’ seems like a ridiculous, though apparently necessary, metric. “Hey look...our vehicles are less likely to fall apart before being purchased!”

Granted...not falling apart before purchase is a necessary thing to me...but the fact that a metric exists for it just hurts my soul (pun not intended).

They are the Kia of copy editing. The initial quality was very high. But as time wore on (and the words were actually read), things fell apart.

“The Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS) is a measure of problems experienced after three years of ownership, while the Initial Quality Study (IQS) is a measure of problems experienced within the first 90 days of ownership.”

No kia has won any VDS awards or they’d talk about it. so therefor a Kia is only good for 90 days.

Thanks for the correction. I admittedly didn’t look up what is readily available through the googles.

I like my Honda, which hasn’t fallen apart or given any problems in the past 729 days.

Or Kia buyers are less likely to take their new cars in for something small because a) they don’t have the time cause they’re working all the damn time to afford even the Kia and b) they’re worried they’d have to foot the bill if whatever they brought it in for wasn’t warrantied.

Luckily, mine has made it past 90 days. I wonder what will happen between now and the three year mark.

It is a strange measure and I think long-term reliability is much more important.

On the other hand, no one wants to buy a car that develops problems in the first 90 days.

That’s better than 1 out of 3 years in a row.

Is 2 out of 3 years in a row mathematically better by +1 compared to 1 out of 3 years in a row? Or is the calculation more complex than that?
